7 Financial Tips for a Stress-free Vacation

Your trip is paid for and your suitcase is packed. Have you forgotten something? Probably! Preparing for a vacation is stressful. To take the pressure off, we’ve gathered a few tips on how to take care of money matters to avoid surprises during your getaway.

1. Take two credit cards and some cash in local currency.

Moya Financial offers a lineup of Visa* cards exclusive to our members, and these cards offer some truly outstanding features and benefits. Talk to one of our experts to make sure you have the card that’s right for you.

Having cash on hand is very helpful on a trip, especially for tipping, paying for parking, buying snacks, and other cash-only transactions. Smaller amounts of US dollars and euros are available at Moya’s main branch. With a few days’ notice, we can provide larger amounts. You can order any currency at least five days before your departure.

2. Temporarily raise the credit limit of the credit cards you take, if necessary.

Make sure you have enough credit available to cover all holiday expenses, plus a “cushion” in case of the unexpected. Moya’s credit cardholder support team works 24/7 every day of the year, so call us at 1-855-341-4643 if you need to increase your credit limit.

Call if you:

  • Have a question about your account;
  • Are having difficulty checking your account through MyCardInfo;
  • Have lost your card; or
  • Suspect that your card has been compromised in any way.

3. Keep your debit and credit cards secure and be particularly vigilant not to be victimized by an ATM scam.

Keep your cards hidden and separate from each other. When travelling outside Canada, you can still access your chequing or savings accounts with your Moya MemberCard® debit card. When using an ATM for convenient access to your funds, look for the ACCEL POS Network, THE EXCHANGE® in the US, or the Cirrus US and International Network logos to ensure you are using a secure bank machine. Note that usage fees will apply.

4. Consider additional insurance for basic losses or in case of a stolen credit card.

Some credit cards include benefits to help you get the assistance you need around the clock and around the world. Speak with one of Moya’s cardholder support experts by calling 1-855-341-4643 to ensure you have the coverage you need.

5. Take advantage of online banking and the Moya Mobile App.

Moya Mobile online banking provides secure access to your accounts and information so you can transfer funds, pay bills, or check your balances in the palm of your hand, no matter where you are. And because you’re using your own mobile device, you don’t have to worry about using an unsecured public computer.

6. Learn about the financial infrastructure in your destination country.

Some countries do not have many credit/debit payment machines or ATMs. If you are travelling to remote areas, you may be able to pay only in cash – do some online research to find out. Also find out what the exchange rate is and what goods and services cost in your destination so you can have enough cash to cover your expected expenses, plus the unexpected.

7. Arrange travel insurance with medical assistance abroad.

Purchase travel insurance to cover you and your family against travel risks such as lost or stolen luggage, trip cancellation if you are unable to travel for unexpected medical reasons, and most importantly, unexpected medical costs abroad – our provincial health plan does not cover all foreign medical costs.
